Situation
The supplier managed its product options in a planner-owned spreadsheet that fed both engineering and SAP. Every new program added rows; nobody could prove which combinations were valid, and each change was re-keyed into SAP by hand.
What we did
- Modelled the product as configurable modules with option sets and choice rules validated against two years of real orders.
- Configured change management with impact analysis across variants.
- Built a governed part and BOM interface to SAP with a monitored error queue.
Outcome
Configurations are now generated rather than maintained. Engineering changes take days rather than weeks, and the planner who owned the spreadsheet now owns the option rules in Windchill.
