Moving Windchill to Azure Kubernetes with zero-downtime releases

Migrated an on-premises Windchill 12 environment to AKS with Helm-based pipelines and rehearsed rollbacks.

Situation

The customer ran Windchill on ageing on-premises servers. Every release required a weekend outage, test environments were months out of date, and infrastructure knowledge sat with one person.

What we did

  • Designed a reference architecture on Azure Kubernetes Service with Azure Files for vaults and a managed database.
  • Built Helm-based deployment pipelines with automated smoke tests and a rehearsed rollback path.
  • Introduced environment cloning so test and training environments are refreshed from production in hours.

Outcome

Routine releases now roll out during working hours. The customer’s IT team operates the platform from documented runbooks, with our engineers on second line.
